NYC Travel Tips

Planning a fun trip to New York City? We’ve compiled some helpful travel tips and tricks, as well as a list of our favorite NYC hotels, shopping spots, restaurants and bars, and other iconic destinations. Many destinations are within walking distance from our drop-off location on West 53rd Street and 6th Avenue, however, there are also plenty more hot spots in other neighborhoods throughout the city to choose from!

Travel and Save Like a Local.

Do get an MTA MetroCard to reach to different city attractions and don’t forget to travel outside of Manhattan to fun, local enclaves like Williamsburg in Brooklyn. MTA MetroCards can be purchased at most MTA subway stations either as one-day, seven-day passes or pay-per-ride. A substantial savings over New York City cab fares that can range anywhere from $5 to $25 per trip in Manhattan. Visit the MTA website for more information.

NYC Iconic Yellow Taxis.

How do you know if a taxicab is available? If the top light is lit, the cab is open to take passengers. Most taxi cabs accept credit cards but cash is always welcome.

Green Is the New Yellow.

New York City recently introduced green ‘boro taxis’ to the sea of iconic NYC yellow taxis. If you find yourself exploring local watering holes in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island and need to make your way back into Manhattan, hop into one of these apple green cabs. Unfortunately, these cabs can’t pick up passengers within the ‘yellow’ zone (south of East 96th and West 110th Streets), but outside of that area feel free to go green!

Stay Connected.

Not All Avenues Are Created Equal.

Some New York City avenues have names that might confuse visitors to the city. Here’s a quick guide on which numbered avenues have unique monikers.

  • Avenue of The Americans = 6th Avenue
  • West End Avenue = 11th Avenue
  • Columbus Avenue = 9th Avenue
  • Amsterdam Avenue = 10th Avenue (only when you travel above 59th St.)

Knowledge Can Be Free.

Did you know that the listed price of admission to many New York City museums is just a suggested donation? Additionally, many of the city’s museums offerfree general admission on specific days of the week, including The Museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology, Museum of Modern Art, New York Hall of Science, The Morgan Library and Museum, Children’s Museum of Manhattan and more. See the complete list here.
